I went to a contest over the weekend at Woodward West in Tehachapi, CA (kind of near Bakersfield). The night I arrived I went in to the lodge to check-in and get a room and I ran into a guy sitting at the bar decked out in all Franco gear. He introduced himself as “Sauce” and showed me the new tattoo he’d gotten of the Franco Shade Quitter’s Ghost complete with the banner that reads, “Quitters Never Lose.” It is really flattering to see that there are people who identify so closely with the brand (or even just the ideology) that they are willing to represent it for life. I know it must seem kind of inadequate compared to the weight of his gesture, but I got his email and told him I would send him a shirt.

I went to lunch today at Cowgirls Cafe in Santa Ana, just down the road from the Franco Shade Warehouse. It’s the kind of place that has EVERYTHING on the menu and serves breakfast all day. It lacks the polish of an established chain, but there is a kind of charm in the filth and scumminess of it. Joe just sent me an IM conversation he’s been having with our friend Rawlinson Rivera. You see Rawlinson is the lucky fella who had the pleasure of filling up my hand with his package in the last blog. It seems that now Rawlinson is starting to get uncomfortable at the prospect of the whole world (wide web) being able to see how comfortably his business was nestled into my little hand. Funny how a guy can be all happy and drunk at a party one night and just content to put his junk anywhere and then the next night the exact same guy will be all shy and embarrassed and so concerned about NOT appearing gay!

So Joe mentioned it already (thanks Joe!), but this weekend I will be throwing myself a birthday party. Typically throwing yourself a party would be the height of pathetic-ness or pretentiousness (and I am not sure that in my case it isn’t both), but I do have the excuse that this Saturday will be the first Saturday of the month and that is when I typically open up my studio for the Santa Ana Art Walk anyway. In a way, I guess I am kind of co-opting my own Art Walk party to throw myself a birthday party instead (as well!).
