What a Week!

I’m moving into a new house this week (that means moving the entire office too!) and this all has to be done by Friday.  Saturday (the very next day!) is the opening of my art show and I have been putting in VERY late nights trying to get prepared.  Last weekend one of my best friends got married and I wasn’t even invited and next week the GOST Spring/Summer season is supposed to be released.  I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when I attempted to go run an errand today only to discover my car quarantined (as it was in the picture above)!  The entire parking lot across the street from my loft, where I’d left my car parked overnight had been roped off.  Every car had been removed…except mine!!  They paved and painted the entire lot around my car and there was no way to get out!!

What a week!

Arlo Art Show Coming Up!

I like to call myself an artist.  That is I think it sounds cool to tell people, “I’m an artist!”  And it gives me free license to dress like a jack-ass and do “unconventional” things with my hair.  Most of the time I get by just fine masquerading as an artist, but every once in a while something comes along that forces me to put my money (pretend “artist money!”) where my introspective, misanthropic, overwrought, mostly wide-open artist mouth is.

Some friends from the art department at Paul Frank are going to be in a group show in Downtown Santa Ana and they asked me to join them.  My pretentious, narcissistic artist mouth jumped to accept the invitation way before my dimwitted, but more thoughtful (duh!) mind had a chance to say, “wait, what the fuck??”

So for the last few weeks it has been extremely long nights with paint in my fingernails and podcast episodes of “This American Life” for company, getting loopy on chemical fumes and cursing at my canvas as I circumnavigate my way from one crisis to another.

This is what it means to be an artist??  I need to learn to keep my big artist mouth shut!  I think I am just going to start telling people that I’m in a band.

The “No Brow” art show will be Saturday, May 1st in Downtown Santa Ana at the Ginac Gallery.

Smasher! Ernie Reyes, Jr.!

Before Jon Julio and Manny Pacquiao, Ernie Reyes, Jr. was the original bad-ass Filipino.  Many of us grew up watching Ernie in movies like “Surf Ninjas” and “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”  And we have watched Ernie grow up, from a cute little martial arts prodigy into a grown-up, toned up, ass-kicking machine.  Far from becoming another child star cliché, a la Corey Haim (RIP), Ernie has managed his life and his career and has worked continuously since his first appearances on the big screen back in 1985 in “The Last Dragon” and “Red Sonja” (with Brigitte Nelson and Arnold Schwarzenegger!).  Ernie has performed in and/or choreographed stunts for many modern blockbusters including “The Rundown” with The Rock, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and even “Avatar!”

I have had this funny, charmed life where cool random things just happen, like winning the X Games or making thousands of dollars selling giant over-sized denim tuxedo pants to teenagers in the 90s (WTF??).

So it should come as no surprise that when my ex-wife decided to get remarried she married Ernie Reyes, Jr.

Last weekend we all went to the grand opening of “Smasher,” Ernie’s new martial arts studio in Newport.

It was really cool.  They had breakdancers and martial artists doing all kinds of exhibitions.  There were people flipping and flying through the air.  The best part was that everyone got to put on gloves and practice timing and combinations with Ernie.

Smasher offers classes during the week for people of any age or skill level looking to get personalized training from Ernie.  The classes are a hybrid of the many different styles Ernie is trained in, but have an emphasis on the kind of dramatic fighting and stunt techniques that are used in motion pictures and entertainment.

You can visit Ernie at Smasher Martial Arts in Newport Beach and train with the best, who knows you could be the Last Dragon!
