Doughnut Chicken Sandwich! LA County Fair!

Nikki’s mom invited us to the LA County Fair over the weekend.

So we took all of the kids out to the Pomona fairgrounds to ride rides, play midway games and most importantly to eat “fair food.”

I am originally from Texas and attending the State Fair of Texas every year was a big part of my childhood.

The State Fair of Texas is famous for innovation when it comes to fried foods.  Every year they hold a contest to come up with the next great fair food and past winners have included fried Twinkies, fried Coke and fried bacon.  One of the top contenders for this year’s fair was FRIED BUTTER!

Needless to say I was very interested to see what the LA County Fair would have to offer.

Our samplings started out pretty standard.  We had turkey legs, caramel apples, cotton candy and frozen lemonade.  It wasn’t until we came across a sign advertising the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Chicken Sandwich that things started to get interesting.

When I first saw the sign I wasn’t sure if it even meant what it looked like it meant.  I thought maybe it was two separate things being advertised together, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and chicken sandwiches.  I even asked Nikki, “that couldn’t really be a doughnut chicken sandwich, could it?”  I mean it sounded too good to be true!

You see, I’m the kind of guy who loves McGriddle sandwiches.  You know, the Egg McMuffin that is basically served between two pancakes.  I love Monte Cristo sandwiches, which are ham and cheese sandwiches dipped in batter and deep fried and served like french toast!  I love sweet and savory dishes, especially when they incorporate breakfast foods and the more obnoxious and over the top, the better!  Roscoe’s Fried Chicken and Waffles?  Yes and thank you!

Recently we took the kids to Denny’s and I saw on the menu that some mad genius had come up with a Grand Slam burrito!  They took all of the ingredients from Denny’s signature Grand Slam: eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and pancakes and wrapped them all up into one giant burrito.  Brilliant!  (And yes I ordered it.)

So, the promise of a chicken sandwich served between two doughnuts and garnished with raspberry jam sounded like something I could really get into, if only it was true.  We went and waited in line and to my surprise (and delight!) we ordered and received a Krispy Kreme Doughnut Chicken Sandwich that came exactly as advertised; a fried chicken patty served between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  It even came with a side of honey!

Everyone had a bite and the verdict was pretty unanimous, the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Chicken Sandwich was a winner!  It was truly amazing!  Everyone loved it (except for Nikki, but she doesn’t share my enthusiasm for sweet and savory dishes and she also doesn’t like funny movies like “The Hangover,” so phooey!).

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Chicken Sandwich, you’re a WINNER!
